We are delighted to host volunteering opportunities for young people working towards their DofE award.
We offer 10 places from October to March each year. To register your interest contact Steve at friendsofbatchwood@gmail.com
We welcome all young people including those who need adjustments to participate.
Our scheme runs on the third Sunday of each month, from 9.15am to 1.15pm. This means we offer up to 24 hours of volunteering over 6 months. Our volunteering is suitable for Bronze and Silver Awards.
What is involved
You will do woodland conservation in the semi-ancient woodland within the Batchwood Estate. You will be taught to use a range of hand-tools ensuring you use them for the right task in the right way. You will learn how and why we manage the woodland.
Tasks might include cutting back over-grown trees and ground-cover, coppicing where we weave baskets to prevent deer eating the new shoots, creating dead-hedges and maintaining paths.
It is outdoor, physical work. However, we have a range of tasks to suit a diverse range of participants. If you are unsure this is for you, contact us to explore the possibilities.
You will be responsible to the Friends of Batchwood volunteers. They have DBS safeguarding clearance and insurance to cover your activities. We create a friendly environment where you learn teamwork, planning and safe working skills. The adult volunteers work alongside you.

No skills or experience needed
You do not need any specialist skills or experience! We will give you the training and support you need to safely use the equipment and tools provided. Please make sure that your tetanus vaccinations are up to date. We just ask that you have a willingness to learn, work hard and behave appropriately.
What to wear
We will work in most weather unless it becomes unsafe underfoot, overhead or to use hand-tools. You must wear sturdy footwear, such as walking boots and weather appropriate clothing. We do not permit trainers. Rain coats, waterproof trousers and hats are recommended.
Wear thin layers of clothing that can be removed if you are feeling hot. We
will provide you with the equipment you need to carry out the tasks including hi-viz jackets, protective gloves and safety glasses.
We light a small fire to make a hot drink in a break time. Bring a water bottle and a snack. Please do not bring products containing nuts.
