Continuing stormy weather has left the paths even more muddy, the trees a little more damaged and the vegetation generally bashed down. The golf course has become more and more waterlogged. The picture is of the fourth green on the afternoon of 17th January. Despite the weather, the work has continued on the new sports centre and the Wilmott Dixon surveyor has assured us that the building will be finished by May. It will then have to be fitted out, but things may be looking promising at last.
The volunteers are continuing with coppicing. The new coppicing sites are looking a bit raw and battered at the moment, but previous years ‘coups’ are looking settled.
The weather may have been stormy, but it has been basically mild and the first green of the bluebell bulbs is just visible. In mid-January, the snowdrops on the bank were beginning to show flowers. We know there are many places where snowdrops are fully out, but ours are fairly late varieties and don’t usually appear until the first week of February. Spring is on the way.
Update on 26th January
The high winds of 25th January brought down a large, mature ash to the right of the driveway, just inside the wood. It has blocked the path and probably squashed a number of trees in a fairly new planting area. The volunteers will try to clear the path, as soon as they can, and we hope our friends at the fire service will be able to help with the heavy work of clearing the trunk. A tree to the left of the sixth fairway was also uprooted and took a couple of smaller trees with it.
On a brighter note, the snowdrops are really out now, and beginning to look lovely.
